Rd 1 Match report: LPW Baboons v Southern Districts

posted 2 Oct 2011, 17:50 by Richard Derham
The season didn't get off to the most auspicious of beginnings as the teams arrived at Hanson  Park to find extensive earthquake damage and no stumps suitable for an artificial pitch. After a 40 minute delay, the Baboons began their innings. A steady start to the innings saw us get through the first 10 overs with no with no loss. When Taylor Philpott was dismissed his replacement, Harshana Nanayakkara began brightly, striking his first two sixes for LPW. At the 20 over break we were reasonably placed at 57/1, slightly light on runs but with plenty of wickets in hand.

Unfortunately a collapse after the break saw us dismissed for 109 in just 32.5 overs. Four ducks and silly run outs to Jason Woodward and Richard Derham did not help. Numbers 4-6 contributed just 8 runs between them - not good enough from the middle order. Only some big hitting from Madan Chandra late in the innings got the score through to triple figures. Features of the batting were 33 from Harshana and 22* from Madan.

In reply Southern Districts largely cruised through to their target in just 22.5 overs. Inconsistant bowling tended to give the batsmen a steady supply of bad balls to hit. The pick of the bowlers was Kieran Mahan, a wicket keeper bowling in a match for the first time. Madan chandra and Andrew Johns both bowled reasonably but need to cut out the odd loose ball. Max Inkster-Baynes was a bit too inonsistant in line and length, going at more than 7 an over, although he did make the first breakthrough. Paul Dunn only managed one over before the match ended.

All in all, another 40 runs would have made things interesting against last year's section 2 champions.
